The Post-Oly Shuffle: Pairs

The ISU has now posted a list of the competitors expected to skate at Worlds, but there are some surprising entries that look like they might be incorrect. Let's have a look.

- First off, Volosozhar/Morosov are listed as the Ukraine's second team. However, it has been almost common knowledge for the last few weeks that the Olympics would be Tatiana and Stanislav's last competition together; there have been strong rumours that Tatiana will skate for Russia with Maxim Trankov, although M/T have said that they are waiting until the 'end of the year' (I assume season) to decide their future. Either way, like I said, the ISU website has V/T skating in Torino. So I guess we'll see. If Tatiana does skate Worlds, I think that means she won't be able to go next year for Russia.

- Murkhortova/Trankov are also listed, which is not a surprise. Maxim doesn't need to sit out of competition for a year because he doesn't need to switch countries, and I would imagine that these two are desperate to get some sort of redemption after Vancouver. I'm glad, because I like their Love Story.

- Kavaguti/Smirnov are listed, but I did read something saying that Yuko is struggling with her shoulder (as anyone who has watched any event this season could have told her!) and that Alexander is also injured. I really hope they can make it to Turin, because I love them. I kind of wish that Volosozhar and Smirnov would become a partnership. Obviously, Yuko is unlikely to leave skating so soon after giving up her Japanese citizenship, but her shoulder is clearly an issue; it has got to be seriously unhealthy for her to be dislocating and re-locating it so often. Honestly, though, as long as Sasha keeps skating, I'm not too concerned about who it is with!

- Shen/Zhao, of course, are now officially retired. With question marks over almost all of the other top teams, it seems to me that the door is pretty much wide open (save for S/S) for Pang/Tong to take the World title. I would expect to see both them and the Zhangs retiring after this season, though.

- The other team who have a great shot at the World title are Savchenko/Szolkowy. I really hope that these guys have no plans to retire just yet because I love them.

- Langlois/Hay will be at Worlds, along with Dubé/Davison. I really have no idea if either of these two are planning to retire; L/H are not particularly young but have only just come back from Anabelle's surgery and may well want to continue. I like them, so I hope they do. I could take or leave D/D. I wouldn't be surprised if either of these teams retired after this season.

- Both Denney/Barrett and Evora/Ladwig will be at Worlds. D/B, of course, are at the very beginnings of their career, but I imagine that this will be E/L's last season and I hope they can continue the success they had in Vancouver!
